` Beowulf is a story of loyalty, bravery, tradition, and religion. An allegory is a story that has a hidden meaning. Beowulf is an allegory due to its character structure and timeline. The story can be interpreted as a story of loyalty versus pride, a story of religious people on a journey, and a story of loyalty and honor. I believe that the story of Beowulf is a story of loyalty and honor. Beowulf starts off with a king named Hrothgar, who happens to be a blood relative of a great warrior named Beowulf. Beowulf hears that Hrothgar needs help defeating a monster named Grendel. Grendel lives below the mead hall and at night eats the drunk, passed out men. Beowulf defeats Grendel, making Beowulf a hero in the eyes of the Danes. But shortly after, Grendel’s mother arrives at the hall and starts attacking the men in the hall. Beowulf tracks down Grendel’s mother and kills her. After killing the monsters, Beowulf goes to Geatland where he shares the wealth received after killing the two Danish monsters, with a king named Hygelac . After Hearded and his son die in battle, Beowulf takes the throne where he rules for many years. After hearing his hometown was under attack by a fire breathing dragon, Beowulf goes back to Danes to kill the Dragon. When they arrive, all of his men except for one man named Wiglaf coward away. Wiglaf helps Beowulf defeat the dragon but at the end, Beowulf dies from the dragon’s poison which entered his system. Beowulf’s body is cremated in a pyre. The treasure that the dragon guarded was spreaded throughout the kingdom making Beowulf an even greater hero.
Beowulf is full of historical influences and connections. Many of the characters in the story were real people including: Hrothgar, Hearded, and Hygelac (“History of Beowulf”) .
