Everyone dies eventually, even the most famous or rich person will die someday. In the short story, “Masque of the Red Death” by Edgar Allen Poe, the main character Prince Prospero thinks that he can escape the mass spread of the ‘Red Death’, a deadly disease that has spread throughout the kingdom. He throws a party in his magnificent castle and invites all of his friends to hide from the ‘Red Dealth’. The allegory of the story is the mass spread of sickness and shows the problems that Prince Prospero is running from and thinks he can escape because he is wealthy. In this short story, Poe shows the theme that dealth is inevitable and cannot be avoided by portraying Prince Prospero, the Castle, and the Clock.

Every time it chimed, many people got quiet and began to worry. It foreshadows the death of everyone in the castle. When the clock rang it made people scared of what would happen, “when the chimes of the clock yet rang, it was observed that the giddiest grew pale and the more aged and sedate passed their hand over their brows as if in confused reverie or mediation” (Poe 84-85). Poe uses the clock to foreshadow the dealth of everyone in the castle. While many of the people were having a great time when the clock rang it made them weary and they began to worry. The clock rang every single hour like it was counting down until everyone was going to die. The Red Dealth representing the spread of disease keeps getting closer every time the clock rings. Even though many people went to the castle to hide away from their problems deep down they all know that dealth is not something that they can run from. When the ‘Red Death’ entered the castle the clock began to stop ringing, When the clock stopped ringing that is when death was about to occur, ”And the life of the ebony clock went out with one last of the gay” (Poe 88). This shows that when dealth arrived to take people’s lives the clock stopped working. Representing that the clock had run out and now it was time for everyone to die. Due to his high class, he believed that the ‘Red Death’ would not kill him and thought that he could escape dealth. He used his castle to help him escape dealth. He built big walls and had many guards to keep death away from him and all his friends. Ultimately, the time was running out due to dealth being inevitable.
