1. Poe is also famous for using allusions in his writing. Define allusion and record examples from "The Raven" where allusion techniques were used. An allusion is defined as an expression designed to ask something to mind without mentioning it explicitly; an indirect or passing reference.
The bust of Pallas is the most noticeable allusion Poe makes in the poem The Raven. The presence of the bust is mentioned more than one time and it demonstrates the importance Poe gave to this element. Pallas is in Greek mythology the goddess of wisdom, which might be the reason why the Raven decided to sit on it. The Raven could be related with wisdom by the fact that he could think or at least speak and give answers to the narrator. The bust of Pallas could also represent the wisdom Lenore has or at least the one her lover thinks she has. The bust is mentioned in line 41, 53, 68 and 104.
Plutonian shore is another example of an allusion Poe makes on the poem. Pluto is a Roman mythology god of the underworld. Plutonian is the word used to describe related with the underworld, darkness and death. Shore can be used or interpret as the end of the good life and the starting of the underworld or dark side. Mentioning this give a even more gloomy and dark mood to the poem. The term is mentioned in lines 47 and 98.
