Andrew Jackson: Autocrat or Democrat? Andrew Jackson was an autocrat. He was very selfish in his presidency and wanted what was best for himself with little thinking about the country and the people. Jackson wanted state banks so that he could have more control and make more money by supporting the state banks that supported him. In National Bank Controversy Document 1, Andrew Jackson is depicted as a wealthy monarch with captions saying things about how he was “King Andrew the First”. Another example of how Jackson is an autocrat is in National Bank Controversy Document 3, where a Congress member is replying to Jackson’s veto message. The letter states that Jackson is abusing his power of veto to make himself richer and not looking out for the good of the people. Jackson removed the American Indians from their homeland just so he could gain more land for the country. He knew that gaining more land for the southern colonies would make more money and thus him getting wealthier. He wanted the people in office to support him so that he could do everything he wanted to do. Jackson made a front saying that it was because he wanted those jobs to be fulfilled by people that have fresh ideas and that he wanted to give more unqualified people an opportunity (Spoils System Document 2). In Spoils System Document 3, it tells about a time when a later supporter warned Jackson that an early supporter was bad news and shouldn’t be allowed in that position. Jackson didn’t believe him because he was a later supporter and gave the position to the early supporter anyway. Next thing Jackson knew, his early supporter had stolen tons of money. This shows that Jackson is an autocrat because he just wanted his supporters in the positions and didn’t look for good people to fill in the
