Anger is an emotion in which an individual becomes fulfilled with hatred and energy that has a larger impact than guiltiness. The strong emotion of anger can cause an individual to react to different situations in different ways. For instance, in To Kill a Mockingbird, Jem shows anger and hatred when he loses his temper to when Mrs. Dubose insults Atticus. He destroys her camellia bushes with a baton. Jem’s rage is displayed when Scout describes his actions, “Jem snatched my baton and ran flailing wildly up into the steps into Mrs. Dubose’s front yard, forgetting everything Atticus had said, forgetting she packed a pistol under her shawls, forgetting that if Mrs. Dubose missed, her girl Jesse probably wouldn’t. Moreover, anger can be provoked of racial injustice. In the novel of To Kill a Mockingbird, Walter Cunningham Sr. becomes a part of a mob that tries to lynch Tom Robinson at the jail. However, at the mob, Scout tries to talk Walter about his son. As a result, Walter listens to Scout and decides to take with him away (Lee 154). This implies that anger can be conceived from different ways, Scout decides to control her anger on Walter as Walter had no dominance over his behavior. Though, the emotion of guilt can be perceived from the example as Walter Cunningham Sr. realized he has a son as he was trying to lynch Tom Robinson, which is another reason why Mr. Cunningham chose to stop what he was doing. The emotion of guilt allows a person to look back on themselves and restrains to act selfish. In the novel, Atticus lectured, “Jack! When a child asks you something, answer him for goodness’s sake. But don’t make a production of it. Children are children, but they can spot an evasion quicker than adults, and evasion simply muddles ‘em,” This establishes Atticus tried to make Uncle Jack feel guilty by telling him to be honest when his children ask him for answers and not to ignore
