Problems Asian Americans Face in the Media Does Anti-Orientalism still exist in this world today? Well, the truth is that Anti-Orientalism is still very alive. Asian Americans face a multitude of issues ranging from being denied executive positions in companies to being stereotyped as quiet and indifferent. However, the most significant issue is how they are represented in media. Asians have been discriminated and stereotyped in media for many years. There have been many TV shows and internet articles that have parodied Asian culture and tried to mimic the Asian community, movies that give Asian specific roles to white people, and sitcoms that have constantly have racist jokes about Asians. Asians have long been shown on screen as support roles. They are always assisting the Caucasian protagonist in their job or sacrificing themselves so the Caucasian protagonist can continue to live. When the Asians have been shown on screen as the antagonist role, the villain is always seen as a cowardly person who will beg for mercy once defeated by the Caucasian protagonist. There is even an emphasis on how the Asian antagonist lost to the Caucasian protagonist due to the Caucasian's superior strength and morale. An example of Asian inferiority in film is exhibited during the movie “Pearl Harbor”. Pearl Harbor is about how an American platoon attempted a payback raid against the Japanese for Pearl Harbor. In the end of the film, the platoon crash lands on the coasts of China hoping to gain refuge from the Chinese. The Chinese took the refugees in and sent them back home, but as a result, lost over 250,000 Chinese civilians. At the end of the film, there wasn’t even an honorable mention to those civilians who had lost their lives trying to save the Americans. The immoral ending in “Pearl Harbor” shows how insignificant Asians are to Caucasians in the views of the
