The Holocaust has affected people horrifically especially the less fortunate. The book Night, narrated by Elie Wiesel shows the experience of a young Romanian boy being a prisoner in the Holocaust. Based on the terrible treatment of the less fortunate as seen through the elderly and children in the book Night and the antisemitism in America, it is clear that humanity is essentially not good. Throughout the book Night, it is shown that humanity is essentially not good through the horrific treatment of elderly people. During the book Night Idek explodes and started to beat Elie's father, “And he began beating him with an iron bar”(Wiesel 54). This scene shows how Jews and other prisoners were treated on a daily basis. The Germans or Kapo would take their anger out on the Jews and prisoners in concentration for just doing the little things wrong. During the train ride, Mrs. Shachter kept repeating the word fire until the others had enough, “She received several blows to the head, blows that could have been lethal”(Wiesel 26). During roll call Elie was told to lay on the crate, “I no longer felt anything except the lashes of the whip”(Wiesel 57). This shows how even the kids were treated horrifically. It didn’t even matter what age the children were, if they disobeyed orders or did something they were not supposed to do they would be beaten or even killed. When the child's rope got cut to be hanged, “The third rope was still moving: the child, too light, was still breathing”(Wiesel 65). A child hanging, a poor innocent child? The child wasn’t even heavy enough to cut his circulation off with the rope. The S.S. made a child suffer through his death.
