In the story of Odysseus, Odysseus’s archetype was portrayed as an Epic Hero due to his encounters with monsters, having human weaknesses, and the divine assistance he received from Athena. In one example, while Odysseus was traveling back home, he had divine help from Athena. For example, the text says, “I will turn you into a beggar so that none may know you. Telemachus is near, and I will bring him to you,” Athena has helped Odysseus to hide from the suitors and inform Telemachus that Odysseus has arrived. Similarly, in the modern story of God of War III, the character Kratos contains an Epic Hero archetype.

As a result of this, we are often overcome with feelings of temptation, a strong desire to do or have something. Both Odysseus and his crew encounter numerous circumstances in Homer's "The Odyssey" in which temptation ultimately prevails.
In Homer’s The Odyssey numerous characters demonstrate multiple archetypes throughout the narrative, including Odysseus who acts as both a hero and a trickster. Odysseus’s heroic qualities can be seen when he and his crew reach the island of the Cyclopes. Here he proclaims, “...I’ll make the crossing / in my own ship, with my own company, / and find out what the mainland natives are” (Odyssey 9.71-73). He acts on behalf of his crew to help them survive along their journey.
The role of the archetypal hero, who has incredible bravery, power, leadership, and determination, like Odysseus evolves in Homer’s epic poem, The Odyssey. Odysseus is a king who led his crew on a 10-year journey after a victory in the Trojan War. His motivation was to return home to his beloved wife, Penelope. The poem was written around the 8th Century BC and is set in Ancient Greece around 1200 B.C.E. Odysseus is the King of Ithaca, which is an important factor when considering him a hero. In Ancient Greece, being a member of royalty made Odysseus powerful and placed him in a leadership role.
In the Odyssey, Odysseus fits the archetype of the hero because he is brave. for example when Odysseus and his crew were washed up on Cyclops Island (in book IX). Odysseus was brave enough to enter Polyphemus's cave even though he knew that the Cyclops were giant beings with one eye. ” When we got to the land, we saw a great cave overhung with bushes. This was the home of a huge Cyclops named Polyphemus, who led the life of an outlaw.
Odysseus and his men had travel to the island of the Lotus eaters when he drove “... them, all three wailing, to the ships, tied them down under their rowing benches, and called the rest: “ all hands a board; come, clear the beach and no one taste the Lotus or you lose your hope of home.” (Book 9, lines 48-52, textbook). Odysseus saved three of his man and brought them back to the ship, saving them from a long weary death. Odysseus also taught his remaining man a lesson and showed his men how clever he was in this dire situation. As Odysseus is fleeing from the Laestrygonians, he “...shouted rapid orders at my shipmates: ‘Put your backs in the oars- now row or die… my ship alone… we… escaped our death yet at heart for the dear companions we had lost.”
If you were to think about a man with great abilities like being strong, courageous and intelligent, you could think of people you personally or like me, you could think of someone such as Odysseus. Odysseus fits the definition of an epic hero because he is quick thinking, strong and courageous. Odysseus is one quick thinking individual. He has gotten him and his crew out some some sticky situations with his clever plans. One of these plans were how to get away from Polyphemus, a cyclops who was the son of Poseidon.
Odysseus is tempted by the land of the Lotus-Eaters he desires all that he can benefit by raiding their home. Homer writes, “Then I sent out two picked men and a runner to learn what race of man that land sustained”(92-93). In line 94 Odysseus then learned that his decisions were made in vain, because Odysseus’ men “.. fell in soon enough, with the Lotus-Eaters,” Odysseus took his pride from defeating Troy and turned it into arrogance. This then created problem with Odysseus and his crew and their ability to get back home. One would think that Odysseus would not run into a conflict like he had already endured, but as stated in lines 458-459 Odysseus didn’t learn.
