The director Michael Apted demonstrates the tragedy of Dian Fossey in his film. He uses symbolic symbols, characters and plots to help signify the tragedy archetype. Its starts off with him showing us Dian and her work. Throughout the movie it shows how the main character gets too involved with her work that she loses everything, including her life; But all for the good of the gorillas.
The archetype plot in this film is clearly tragedy. Tragedy is where greatness can be crushed and goodness defeated. Dian being the main one(The Tragic Hero); She starts off as an innocent women that gets faced with harsh, unexpected conditions. She has no experience in her job but is determined to help the gorillas. She wants to learn more about them and get close to them. Throughout her journey she meets Campbell, and eventually ends up falling in love with him. Soon afterward she is faced with a tough decision; Campbell or the gorillas? Lastly, she was affected greatly with the death of the first gorilla she got close to, digit. His death emphasizes her death. Another character was Bob Campbell, the National Geographic photographer. This character is very important in Dians life. If it wasn't for him, she would have not become famous. Dian and Bob also end up falling in love but afterward bob leaves because he was offered a job and that is when their romance ended. Lastly, Sembargare is Dians loyal sidekick. He is an animal tracker that helps Dian with her adventure. Originally, Sembargare was not a tracker of gorillas. He was a tracker of buffalos but he still helps dian. Sembargare and Dian are very close in the film, you can say they were best friends. He was always there for her when she needed him and always found his way back to
