Archetypes Archetypes are in most books, movies, and audios there are. They bring ideas to life with a sense of imagery and meaning that would otherwise be dismal. Within a piece, archetypes make a story flow and move along with important meanings. In Avatar (the 2009 movie directed by James Cameron), there are multiple strong archetypes that add more meaningful and deeper thinking to the messages of the story. The specific situations and interpretations brought by archetypes are key factors to any piece of literature or film. With action scenes and tension between characters, a Supreme Ordeal’s suspense and thrill gives the aspects of a climax and adds meaning to a story’s turning point. The supreme ordeal takes place when the sky people (human) begin to tear down the native’s homes and sacred places. The main conflict in the movie is that sky people are trying to mine unobtanium (a material used to save Earth from an energy crisis that is necessary to survival) from the Omaticaya Clan’s main location. Mining the material would mean completely destroying the homes of the natives. As humans start to tear down Hometree, the natives fight back. A war very quickly breaks out between the two species. The audience watches in shock as loved characters die and the world of Pandora comes crashing down. This can be seen as very significant to the climax of the whole movie, and even starts to tie loose ends together. After all of the suspense and thrill of the battle, a resolution eventually is made and pushes the movie towards its end. The ‘Supreme Ordeal’ is very important because it helps bring all the built up tension to a sudden revelation. As all the two pieces of a storyline come together (Jake as a human and Jake as an avatar), the ordeal is what gives reasoning to the plot and leads it towards a fulfilling
