Carl Jung, a Swiss psychologist and psychiatrist, composed many different ideas that explained the human brain’s psyche. He founded analytical psychology and was among the first experts in his field to explore the religious nature behind human psychology. Along with analytical psychology, he developed the introverted and extroverted analogies. One of his most famous archetypes is the narrative archetypes. The book Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain represents Carl Jung’s narrative archetypes through Huck as the maiden, Tom Sawyer as the wise old man, and Pap Finn as the trickster.

Tom Sawyer, Huck’s best friend, grew up in a different environment than Huck did. He grew up in comfort, however he didn't take it for granted. Tom observed the adults around him growing up, learning from them. He also learned his morals from reading romance and adventure novels. Tom is constantly teaching Huck the rules which helps him learn. The book states, “But Tom Sawyer he hunted me up and said he was going to start a band of robbers, and I might join if I would go back to the widow and be respectable. His main motivations are jealousy, greed, and alcoholism. Pap is jealous of Huck’s fourtune and wants to access that money so he can fuel his addiction to alcohol. Pap fits the trickster archetype through his drunkery and abusivness. The text states, “Pap he hadn’t been seen for more than a year, and that was comfortable for me; I didn’t want to see him no more. He used to always whale me when he was sober and could get his hands on me; though I used to take to the woods most of the time when he was around.” Pap caused loads of trauma for Huck after he left.
