In To Kill a Mockingbird it takes place in Maycomb, Alabama. Scout, her brother, Jem, and their friend Dill are obsessed with Boo Radley, their mysterious neighbor. When Tom Robinson is accused of raping a white woman named Mayella Ewell, Their father Atticus defends him in court, but Tom is convicted. The story examines racial prejudice and the moral education of the young characters. In the classic novel To Kill a Mockingbird, author Harper Lee uses characterization of Atticus to illustrate that it is important to do the right thing because people will look up to them and they will teach the younger generation to do right and justified things. Heck and Atticus are arguing how to handle this situation and Atticus thinks Jem stabbed him when in reality Boo Radley killed him. ‘“Heck,”’ Atticus’s back was turned. ‘“If this thing’s hushed up it’ll be a simple denial to Jem of the way I’ve tried to raise him.”’ (Lee 366).What Atticus means by this is if he lies to Jem it wont help anybody. Atticus thinks he needs to own up to what he did and face the backlash. Although Jem did not even touch Bob Ewell, Atticus thinks that if his son actually laid a hand on Bob, it would cause a lot of controversy throughout the town. This would result in Jem to be looked down upon since his dad served a black man and cause even more drama in their family life. Since people around town already disagree with Atticus’s actions, Atticus believes that they will start to judge Jem and how he lives his life based on how Atticus has raised him. Their neighbors think that a child should have no purpose in showing up in the trial of Tom Robinson and how he is crazy for “murdering” someone even though it was Boo Radley instead. Overall, it spreads a message of doing the right thing even if its the hard decision because if Jem had actually murdered Bob, Atticus wanted to confront him and face it seriously rather than to hide it away so Jem could live a somewhat normal
