1. Atticus’s parenting style is not like most parents in Maycomb. Atticus likes to be straight forward with his kids Jem and Scout and not lie to them. Throughout the story Jem and Scout have to deal with racism. Atticus said,”...you’re confusing that with something else. Way back about nineteen-twenty there was a klan, but it was a political organization more than anything(Lee 196). Atticus is talking to Jem when he says this. In the book Scout says that Mayella must be the loneliest person in the world. Scout says this because Mayella always had to stay home with her siblings and was unable to hang out with friends. Mayella Ewell in my opinion is not worthy of compassion because she has not been around any sort of compassion. Her mother died when she was young, so she didn't learn anything about love or friendship. Instead of actually interacting with people Mayella is left all day to do chores and entertain her siblings. Once Mayella did find someone “new”, Tom Robinson, she flung herself on him. On page 258 it states, “Mr. Finch, I got down offa that chair an’ turned around an’ she sorta jumped on me.” Mayella could not control herself when she finally did interact with the outside world. In the book, “To Kill a Mockingbird”, there are a lot of different scenarios of courage. Atticus tells Jem, “to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is man with a gun in his hand.” I would say courage is defined by having loyalty towards everyone and being able to stand up for yourself in the book.
