What makes someone an outsider? In Tulsa, S.E. Hinton went to a large high school and in all large high schools they would have different groups. Everyone would stay in their own groups as they grew up S.E. thought it was idiotic. She made the book The Outsiders which had the socs and the greasers S.E. would get letters from kids who told her they also had the two groups in there school but they had different names for them.
An outsider usually is someone that is not with a group or a person that’s separates themselves from a group or society. Maybe the Greasers and Ponyboy are outsiders. They might be outsiders because they have long hair that they never wash. Maybe they’re outsiders because they don 't have money like most the Socs do. Maybe they’re outsiders because they don 't wear fancy clothes and drive fancy corvettes to school.
Johnathan Morris Mrs Williams English 1204: 6th period 24 February 2022 Title Why do people sometimes feel like outsiders? One instance where people feel like outsiders is when they are judged and persecuted because of things they cannot control. People are not always accepted into groups, causing them to feel excluded. The feeling of being an outsider is common in people’s teenage years because of the need to find themselves.
Outsider. To the modern student, of any age, an “outsider” is someone who does not fit inside the “normal” bubble . Whether it is looks, personality, or plans for the future, an outsider is never in the majority. In Helen Horowitz’s introduction to her book, “Campus Life”, we see the “outsider” existed even in the early 19th century. In Horowitz introduction, the outsider is described as, “studious, polite, and respectful of authority” and that these student “sought the approval of their teachers, not of their peers” (14).
The Community Within the Gym What is a discourse community? Most will say that it is defined as a group of people with common interests who communicate through particular terms and genres. Reading the article, “The Concept of Discourse Community”, I have found that there is a more complex definition, which include six characteristics that make a group a discourse community, as linguist John Swales states. The characteristics that follow are:
It’s Not Universal Humans are social beings and, typically, we prefer to surround ourselves with similar types of people. Often times, this means excluding others and even outcasting them from society. Nearly everybody has experienced being an outsider. whether it was not knowing anyone at a new school to not having the “must have” item that everyone else seemingly had. The experience of being an outsider is not universal because the feelings associated with being outcast are circumstantial, people react differently, and people have varying degrees of introversion.
At school when lunch time comes around, everyone disperses into their cliques, but not everyone belongs to a group. There is always a table at the corner of the cafeteria waiting to be occupied by the same student, and only him. Unfortunately, he is not the only one because there are many corners in cafeterias, leaving space for the lonely ones. Isolation is becoming quite common in the modern world; and is evident in the novels “Brave New World” by Aldous Huxley, and “The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
Everyone in there life experiences the theme isolation vs. belonging, through life there are many situations this comes up in, everyone wants to feel like they belong but a lot of times there isolated and alone. More times than not people feel alone and do not like it, belonging to something makes you feel accepted and wanted. Starting at young age this concept comes up just when kids are playing there are a group that are playing no child wants to be the one left, as you get older into school there are cliques and everyone wants to belong to one no one likes being the loner. Even as an adult all there friends could be getting married and having kids i'm sure the one person in the group friends hates being the single isolated one with not even
The feeling of not belonging is one of the worst feelings. In the novel, The Secret River by Kate Grenville, 2006, William Thornhill often suffered from this feeling. He lived in poverty in the early parts of the 19th century. They never had enough food to feed the family, or enough warmth to sleep comfortably at night. In attempts to support his family, he shuffled through many awful jobs and was taught if one was born into a poor family they would remain poor for the rest of their life.
Through this, we can see the dangers of being disconnected from others and its adverse effects on one's well-being. Both works show how being isolated from society can lead to monstrous behavior and undesirable transformations in the characters. Isolation is a feeling that people get whenever they are alone or cut off. It makes you, in a way, go crazy. After all, people are made to be together.
There are thousands of people in the world today who are outsiders looking in on the United States Of America. They really have no clue on how America really is. Immigrants think that Americans are just free living it up in boatloads of money, but little do they know America is very corrupt. Lets just say they have never picked up an American history book or learned any type of American culture once they touch down either legally or illegally they would be in for a rude awakening. America is a money hungry country who values war over education, the military can get millions of dollars, yet students are stuck doing fundraisers just to get new books for their school our whole system is corrupt.
Being an outsider is a common feeling among people of all ages. Anything can make someone feel like an outsider, whether it is their age, gender, sexuality, or race. In Premila and Santha's case from
Humans are a social species and we need each other's accompaniment to maintain a stable mental health. Dismiss the notion that being an outSIder is cool
This is true even if people are outsiders for varying reasons, like Kevin and the old man in Home Alone, as well as in Harry Potter. Sometimes, though, this isolation is a very strong negative that can end up hurting people beyond reparation, as is the case for Kafka’s The Metamorphosis. Feeling isolated from the group is a feeling that most people will go through during their lifetime. It can lead to strong connections between people, as was the case with my friend Bronwyn and I. Even though I had an interest in video games and she was an avid movie watcher (when we weren’t reading), we were still able to connect on our feelings and become fast friends.
We all need to belong somewhere. Everyone needs people to be there for them. We need to adore our lives with others, rather it is our family, friends, coworkers, or just society alone. There are a lot of traits that makes everyone unique in their own way with some of these traits people can make you seem like you’re an outsider but it’s false.
