Cooper McMillan Ms. Coen Advanced English 9 May 19, 2023 Title In the ’50s and ‘60s and long before, African Americans did not have the same rights or opportunities as their white counterparts. When this was happening multiple factors led to this such as segregation, redlining, and the availability of certain jobs. During the primary time of the segregation, specifically, from 1954 to 1968, the African Americans Were fighting for the right to be looked upon as equal. This led to pay disparity and caused a lot of different views on money as someone could see in the play A Raisin in the Sun. When Walter and Mama were arguing during breakfast time Mama told Walter, “Now don't you start, child. It's too early in the morning to be talking about money. It ain't Christian” (Hansberry 41). The reader can look at the point where Mama said “it aint Christian” and tell that she uses her religion to form this opinion that she has about money. A different point of view the reader can look at is during another argument between Mama and Walter she said, “Oh So now it's life. Money is life. Once upon a time freedom used to be life now it's money. I guess the world really do change” (Hansberry 73). The reader can imply that Mama didn't grow up in a time with a lot of freedom because she says ‘Once upon a time freedom used to be life’ which shows the reader that she didn't always have freedom and used to strive for freedom and she got that freedom, but the reader could say that her goals where reached but doesn't think that her kids should be able to have their own
