A wise man once said, “The saddest thing about betrayal is that it never comes from your enemies.” In the book Unwind, by Neal Shusterman, he portrays instances where the main characters, Connor, Risa, and Lev were deceived by the people who they depended on the most. As they run away from being unwound, or having their body parts dissembled for others use, they learn quickly that anyone can turn their backs on you. The book illustrates the idea of betrayal and concludes that in the end, you can only depend on yourself. Overall, in the book, Connor was betrayed the most. Connor is first betrayed by his family. “They were going on a family vacation over Thanksgiving. One problem. There were only three tickets”. Risa had become close with her piano teacher during her stay in the state home and feels like he is the closest thing she has to a parent. “Mr. Durkin does not come. This hurts Risa most of all. (25) When she learns she is getting unwound, the person she is the closest with is not there to even say goodbye to her. This makes her feel like she really does not have anyone. When in the safe house, Risa feels betrayed by Connor. “The betrayal is so unexpected, so complete, Risa doesn’t know who to hate more, Roland or Connor.” (196) In Roland’s attempt to rape Risa while she is in the bathroom, Connor just walks in and washes his hands, not trying to stop Roland. This makes Risa furious. Connor also betrays her when he says to Roland, "You two can do whatever you like. Risa and I broke up this morning. Should I turn off the light when I leave?" (197) . This is the second time Risa feels betrayed by Connor but he soon makes her understand that it is to trick Roland into thinking that he does not care.
