Introduction Does the obvious bias shown by Michael Moore detract from the messages he tries to portray? The obvious bias illustrated throughout Michael Moore’s film’s certainly does detract from the messages conveyed, however the obvious bias can highlight some important aspects of the documentary thus adding more value to the message. The purpose of a documentary is to present a nonfictional motion picture which aims to promote or show an aspect of reality, which emphasizes the rational message the director is trying to convey. In order to convey the message that America should never have invaded Iraq, Moore effectively uses omission in order to depict Iraq as a peaceful, thriving society as the scene shows people walking around happily, eating at restaurants, children smiling and flying around kites and kicking soccer balls. This scene almost depicts what the average life in America would be, it makes it more relatable to the audience so they have a stronger emotional response. However, Moore does not show or even mention the horrors of genocide and wars prevalent in Iraq at that time caused by Saddam Hussain (Head, 2015). Moore refrains to mention any of these horrible disasters in Iraq prevalent before American invasion, as it did not fit his views and would conflict with the message he is trying to convey. After showing how peaceful and happy the Iraqi society was, there is a footage showing the US relentlessly bombarding Iraq with missiles. The audience then would come to conclusion that the US were intentionally bombing Iraqi residents, however Moore does not specify that the bombings were actually taken place at military and police centres. This again is another sly use of omission by only telling a part of the truth and not showing the big picture which manipulates the audience to believe Moore’s storytelling. The analysis of omission in this scene draws attention to the obvious bias created through the use of this technique, by misleading the audience to have a certain response to the biased information displayed. In highlighting the obvious bias, it shows the poor reliability and credibility of Moore and message through the unethical use of omissions.
