In most cases, when the word ‘hero’ is spoken, thoughts of people in spandex suits, flying over cities pop up, but in reality, they can look just like us. Well, possibly a bit shorter. Bilbo Baggins gives the term “hero” an alternate meaning. in the beginning, Bilbo was just like any other hobbit. He had a routine, and he followed it every day. Throughout the story “The Hobbit”, Bilbo slowly let his more Tookish side show. For example, when Bilbo was in Gollum’s cave, as a hobbit, he would have cowered and let Gollum have his way. After he let his hero side take over, he used everything in his ability to get out of there, especially his wit. One especially heroic time was when Bilbo left the Shire. It may not seem like much, but it was the start of something truly magnificent. It was very hard for Bilbo to leave, considering that his days so far had been very mellow, and he knew that it would all change. It is very hard to just up and leave everything you love and are use to behind. He left his proper shelter to keep the cold out, his many meals to keep him nice and full, and his warm bed without any foul monsters lurking all at once in the blink of an eye. Being in Mirkwood Forest, far from home, was very new to Bilbo. Not too long after they entered, the spiders came. They spun the dwarves into little webs and were planning on having a nice meal, that is until Bilbo stepped in and saved the day. He slid the ring onto his finger and was no longer visible. Using this to his advantage, he freed the dwarves from their tightly bound prisons. Thankfully, he also had his dagger, Sting, handy. There was definitely a reason it was named so.
