It is a brain illness that causes unusual fluctuations in a person’s mood, but the fluctuations that people who suffer with bipolar disorder have experiences in which the situation is severe that it can impact the work performance, school activities, and day to day functions. Bipolar disorder can be treated, so that people with the disorder can lead happy, healthy lives. It is hard for someone who suffers from bipolar disorder to gain traction from those close to them. Ted Turner has bipolar disorder which intervened with his life, but he still carried on forward. Those who suffer from bipolar disorder are often judged as not doing that as which a “normal” person does, but they can do that of which other people do. Bipolar disorder was discovered during the time of the ancient Greeks. They believed that this form of manic depression dealt with phlegm, choler, black bile, and blood; these four body fluids were believed to have been the cause of bipolar disorder in that they can cause chemical imbalances in the body. Another idea that might have caused bipolar disorder are environmental factors, such as Satan, God, stress, education, and poverty. The effects of bipolar disorder can affect the lives of the person suffering and those around them. Bipolar disorder affects work, school, relationships, physical health, and many other aspects of everyday life, while the worst effect of bipolar disorder is suicide with an estimate of 25% to 50% people affected with bipolar disorder attempt suicide, and 11% commit it. Also, people who suffer from bipolar disorder have a higher change to report that they are being impaired most of the time in their ability to work than that of a person who is unipolar depressed. Just like any illness, there are many types of bipolar disorders. Symptoms for bipolar I disorders are when a person has had at least one manic episode that occurred after, or was followed by a hypomanic or depressive episode. Bipolar II disorder symptoms occur when a person has one major hypomanic and one depressive episode, but no manic episode. Symptoms of cyclothymic are when a person has had at least two years of frequent periods of hypomania and depressive episodes. There are many different exams to determine if a person is suffering from bipolar disorder or not. A physical exam and lab test can be used to identify medical problems that could have arisen from the symptoms. A psychiatrist will help analyze the person by a series of question, which can help get the thoughts, behavior patterns, and feelings of a person; a questionnaire can also be used, and questions can be asked to those close to the person suffering from the illness. A person can be asked to keep a daily record of their moods, and see if there are any unusual
