From 1861 to 1865, a Civil War occurred. People in the war had shown bravery, selflessness, and sacrifice. These are all examples of Heroism. Heroism is showing great courage and putting others first, even if you're risking something for yourself. Harriet was a slave for a while in her life. She escaped, and then selflessly went back to save other slaves. She was supposed to take 11 slaves to Canada this time, and she had never been to Canada before. She showed selflessness because “If they were caught, the eleven runaways would be whipped and sold south, but she - she would probably be hanged.” (Petry 153). She didn’t show her struggles because she wanted to keep the runaways confident that they would make the journey. Harriet was not only selfless, but she also was willing to sacrifice herself like Joby in the short story “The Drummer Boy of Shiloh”
