In today's society, bravery is a difficult trait to have. For many people, it takes a while to fully learn and show what bravery is through whatever they go through in life. This is the case for some of the characters in To Kill A Mockingbird. One of the main characters learns the true meaning of bravery from different events that happen in their lives. Jem believes bravery is never turning down a dare. Jem later learns how to show bravery by the people’s actions around them, like their father Atticus, when he defends a black man wrongly accused of rape by Mayella Ewell. Jem also learns how other people show bravery. He learns that Mrs. Dubose overcomes an addiction with the help of him reading to her. No one else wants to touch the house because they are scared of boo radley. Jem might be scared, but he never turns down a dare. When talking to Jem Dill says,“I won't say you ran out on a dare an' I'll swap you The Grey Ghost if you just go up and touch the house.”(Lee 18). In conclusion, Jem shows his bravery by doing something no one else would do by accomplishing his dare. In addition, when Atticus runs into Mr. Ewell he shows bravery by not running away from him and letting Mr Ewell spit in his face. This event develops the theme that when he stands up to Mr Ewell he is saving Mayella Ewell from any anger he has that could be used on her. This proves that Atticus is showing bravery because even though he could get hurt he would rather it be him than anyone else. Atticus says,“The man had to have some kind of comeback, he kinda always does. So if spittin gin my face and threatening me saved Mayella Ewell on extra beating, that's something i'll gladly take.”(Lee 292-293). In summary, Atticus shows his bravery by letting someone be rude to him to save someone else from getting
