Think about someone that you admire, do you admire that person because of something brave or courageous they have done? Bravery and courage can be found in many different kinds of situations. It is when you stand up for something that you believe in or when you commit an act that pushes you out of your comfort zone. Often times, an act of bravery or courage is done without that person even knowing it. There are several examples of courage in Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. In the book, Scout asks Atticus why he is defending a Negro when the rest of the town thinks he shouldn’t. Atticus replies with this: “Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win”(Lee, 76). By Atticus defending Tom, he showed courage by standing up to the entire town of Maycomb for what he believed in. A different kind of courage was Mrs.Dubose’s fight against her addiction to morphine right before she died. This is considered an act of bravery and courage because she knew it wasn’t going to be easy, but was determined to finish it. According to Atticus when he was talking to Jem:“I wanted you to see what real courage is...It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what”(Lee, 112). He came just in time to save Jem and Scout when Bob Ewell tried to kill them:“The man was walking with the staccato steps of someone carrying a load too heavy for him...He was carrying Jem”(Lee, 263).
