Chapter 1

The narrator talks about how simple and boring of a town Maycomb is and how no one was in a rush to get anywhere those days. The days seemed longer than it was and nothing out of the ordinary ever happened in the town. They live in Maycomb, Alabama and the story takes place in the 1930s during the Great Depression where everyone was practically poor.

Scout uses the word satisfactory to describe how she and Jem feel about their father; meaning that they view him as a respected figure who is enough to satisfy their needs. Scout considers Calpurnia to be a tyrant because of the harsh treatment that is directed towards her. This reveals that Scout and Jem are extremely curious, and are very interested in any rumors or legends surrounding the neighborhood. This also means that they have a sense of immaturity to them, believing anything that might interest or regard them in anyway. The townspeople hate that Atticus is defending him, and have even gone as far enough to torment the kids about it. Everyone is looking down at the family, and is shaming them. Despite everything, Atticus is taking this case because it is a principle that he is mindful of, and he wouldn’t be considered a real lawyer in legislation in his terms. He also believes that if he does not take this case, he wouldn’t be able to tell Jem and Scout what they can and can’t do anymore.

I believe Atticus wanted Scout to hear what he said during the conversation with Jack because he wants Scout to hear the about the case from his side of the story, since she has been hearing a lot about it from the town and her fellow schoolmates. He also wants Scout to hear how proud he is of Scout’s behavior, despite what everyone is saying about him. He know that with his upcoming case, her and Jem are going experience hate and badmouth from the town, so he wants them to keep fighting through it.
