According to Upton Sinclair’s, “The Jungle,”numerous types of meats were mixed together with no discretion. There were meats that were sold even after rotting, the meat covered in white mold. Meats were injected with toxic preservatives and chemicals. Meat was left on the ground, trampled and spit on and still sold. Rats, poop, dust, leaky roof water were all things that came into contact with the produced meat.

“ ‘And now famine beginning to look ghastly and pale in every face that nothing was spared to maintain life and to do those things which seem incredible, as to dig up dead corpse out of graves and to eat them, and some have licked up the blood which hath fallen from their weak fellows’ “, reads a firsthand account from George Percy who was an eyewitness of cannibalism in Jamestown, during the “Starving Time” in 1609-1610. In the spring of May 1607, three English ships carried about 110 Englishmen who sailed to the mouth of a substantial bay on the coast of Virginia known as the Chesapeake Bay. Additionally, this was the first permanent English colony/settlement in the New World, United States. However, little did they know that the first year
The next focal point lands on the villagers of Papua New Guinea who also happen to regularly partake in cannibalism. It was observed that the women of that village were often coming down with an illness that the locals called kuru, “meaning to shake or tremble” (26). Kuru began with aching limbs and progressed to an unusual gait, and it ended with the victims being unable to swallow because the muscles stopped working. The brains of the victims of kuru were sent to be researched, and this act is what led one veterinarian to notice the similarities between the
In “The Jungle”, Upton Sinclair depends upon the use of pathos through imagery to portray the theme of the dehumanizing evils of meat industry. To Appeal to the unaware American consumers about the process of meat process and the harsh way the workers are treated, the author includes in his excerpt, “There would be meat that had tumbled out on the floor, in the dirt and sawdust, where the workers had tramped and spit uncounted billions of consumption germs.” Sinclair doesn’t want people to pass through his message unnoticed, through his carefully picked imagery, he wants them to imagine the life visually to make a change. Through his quote, “tumbled out on the floor in the dirt and sawdust” he is expressing how the workers who are working
“- And while we are on the topic of horrible and unethical practices of the rich man taking advantage of the poor, lets discuss the conditions of the working man in the meat industry.” He continued to discuss the gruesome, shocking, and awful treatments that the men had to deal with on a daily, reading an excerpt from his article, “Let a man so much as scrape his finger pushing a truck in the pickle rooms, and he might have a sore that would put him out of the world; all the joints in his fingers might be eaten by the acid, one by
During the harsh journey through the mountains, The Donner Party’s last resort for surviving the winter was cannibalism! This short story explains and questions how people find eating animals morally acceptable. Steiner 's short story explains that whenever people think these animals are being treated respectfully they are being ignorant to the fact of how these animals are truly treated; Steiner brings up the fact of how an animals typical horrid life is and how it transitions from its horrid life to being killed by a butcher in a matter of seconds. Moreover, Steiner also adheres to the topic of how unacceptable, it is to kill these animals just for human consumption. Steiner 's purpose in writing this short story is to display to us the fact that eating any animal is not only wrong, but it is just downright unacceptable as it is mass murder of these innocent animals. Finally, Steiner tries to define at his best, what a strict vegan truly
The consumption of animal meat is highly accepted in today’s society, however, the methods, in which the animals are killed are sometimes questioned for their cruelty. David Wallace, in considering the Lobster, takes the readers to the Maine Lobster Festival, where the consumption of lobsters is exploited, and the festival's attendees celebrate these acts. However, the essay goes furthermore than narrating the lobster’s festival, because through sensory details, and different techniques, he makes the readers question society’s morality. By stressing the cruelty it takes boiling lobsters alive, Wallace is capable of creating a sense of awareness in society decisions that demonstrate their corrupted morality, and how it affects directly others (like lobsters)

In Grendel, he is only a monster since he is part human. With his human trait mixed with animal trait, he seems to be a monster because of his morphed body, but that is at first glance. Most of his monster traits are deep human traits, like his cannibalism, his murderous ideas, or even his thought process that life is meaningless. These are all human traits and but not visible in every person, so in post two by Freddy he call Grendel inhuman nature, but I do not see an inhuman nature but a disturbed persons brain, which only makes him more human because he developed the wrong way not by the standard person’s life. While as a person who deemed as a social outcast, which stunted his growth mentally and morally.
A key cause in resorting to cannibalism is not have enough nutrients to survive, which is often caused by lack of food and/or water. It is emphasized that the crew in Pollard’s boat was reduced to eating very little “with barely a pound of hardtack left to share among ten men.” As the men got more hungry their bodies began to deteriorate and the need for food was becoming overwhelming. Without food the men began to starve, their bodies in desperate need for food and water once provided by the hard bread and meat of their depleted rations. Despite the navigation equipment salvaged from the wreck of the Essex, both Pollard and Chase miscalculated their positions, and storms and strong currents drove their boats away from their destination.
In a world where humans rely on cannibalism and murder, it is difficult to think there is any good left in the human race. In the novel The Road by Cormac McCarthy, a son and father are abandoned in a post-apocalyptic world. They battle finding shelter, food and warmth nearly every day. Though the people around them steal and kill in order to survive, the father made sure he and his son never added onto the cruelness of the world they lived in. Through the unnamed boy, McCarthy conveys the message that during desperate times, the worst thing one can lose is their sense of morality.
