Do you believe that censorship, Fake news, and suicide are significant problems in the united states? Fahrenheit 451 explores the struggle between man's desire for knowledge and individuality in a society that expects ignorance and conformity (The Albert Team). Fahrenheit 451 is similar to modern-day society through the idea of censorship of individual ideas and beliefs, Fake news/misinformation, and suicide.
Censorship, the suppression of words, images, or ideas that are "offensive," happens whenever some people succeed in imposing their personal political or moral values on others. (in text cite). In Fahrenheit 451 and in world there are many instances of fake news and or fake information put out to the people. “The search is over, Montag is dead; A crime against society has been avenged” (Bradberry page 142). In fahrenheit 451 the main character Montag is running from a heated chase, once the government realizes they are not goning to find him they make a fake broadcast where they “catch him” to settle the nerves of the people. “False stories that are deliberately published or sent around, in order to make people believe something untrue” (Rutherford page 1). This is important because news sources can fabricate information to make it sound better for there demographic. Mildred was a very troubled adult she ignore her mental issues and didn’t reach out for any sort of help. Mildred had a sad, boring, repetitive life and had no hope or joy in her life which led her to abuse her prescriptions and eventually led her to attempt suicide. “Those can include practicing or preparing for suicide, which could look like exhibiting unusual behaviors with guns, pills or other potentially lethal items, according to SAMHSA.” (Rodgers 1). In the society Mildred lived in almost all of the citizens showed many signs of mental health issues. If the government or families could have recognized these symptoms like Schimelfening talked about in her article the people facing these issues could have gotten the help they needed. Then there would be no need for the “handymen” and their machines. Theses 2 quotes are very important because they give light on a very sensitive topic and how it connects to the
