Reckless or Heroic? The adage, "You and only you are responsible for your life choices and decisions." by Robert T. Kiyosaki establishes the idea that only you are responsible for the choices you make. We can't expect others to be held accountable for our actions. This relates to the story "Into the Wild" by Jon Krakauer where Chris McCandless decides to go out in the wild on his own. He comes across dangerous moments where he has to be responsible for his actions. Although some people may think that McCandless's plan was a great way to be self-reliant, others may argue that it was reckless and unsafe. Without the proper knowledge and experience, he was also unable to adequately identify edible plants and animals, or even know how to construct a shelter. McCandless’s innocence led him to a dangerous situation which ended in tragedy. He was unprepared to handle the difficulties of the wild and was ultimately unable to survive in such harsh conditions. McCandless ventured deep into the Alaskan wilderness. He was inspired by stories of adventurers and was determined to define himself on his own terms. In the book “Into the Wild” it states “Don’t settle down and sit in one place. Move around, be nomadic, make each day a new horizon” (Krakauer). This piece of evidence discusses how He chose to chase his dream of finding freedom from material possessions and human interaction. By pursuing this goal, he created an inspiring example for all those who seek to live differently than society’s expectations. I still believe that Chris McCandless' choice to go out into the wilderness was an inherently unsafe one. His lack of preparation was dangerous and ultimately, led to his death. However, despite the grave consequences of his decision, it was still the right one for him. In the text it states “I don’t want to know what time it is. I don’t want to know what day it is or where I am. None of
