My Problematic Fave: Grey’s Anatomy Characters in media can only be as great as they are written to be. Consumers often strive for equal representation without knowing what representation of all groups truly entails. To correct this, writers and producers will give enough representation of certain groups to satisfy this taste for equality then deny the characters the ability to fully express their talents and capabilities throughout the show. Her self-centered and cocky attitude give her a negative attitude that is expressed in all her interactions with other characters on the show. According to Psychology Today, “The hallmarks of Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) are grandiosity, a lack of empathy for other people, and a need for admiration.” A narcissist is well-known to talk high of themselves, just as Christina does, but they also fail deeply at interpersonal communications. She establishes relationships in a snap, but her inability to maintain them reveals another depreciating flaw in her character. Her ambitious attitude prevents her from letting anything get in the way of her goals. From the beginning, she expresses her desire to be a cardiothoracic surgeon. Before she is officially able to choose cardio as a specialty, she forms a special bond with the chief of cardiothoracic surgery at the time, Preston Burke. Originally, she dated him because she truly loved and cared for him. Dating Burke had its own set of positive consequences, though, such as being specially selected to assist on his surgeries and one-on-one student-teacher training sessions. When he left Christina at the altar, it devastated her and ruined her ability to trust men. Later in the series, Christina leaves Seattle and accepts a job at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. After experiencing the benefits of being romantically involved with higher-ups, she is quick to flirt with her new boss, Darren Parker. Before long, the two were hooking up frequently. In season 9 episode 5, Dr. Yang and Dr. Parker are lying in bed when he asks her if she prefers to be big or little spoon. She replies, “I’m not a spoon. I’m a knife. And I’m going to stab you in the eyeball.” With this statement, Christina reveals her lack of affection for Darren and further proves the point that she is only using him.
