I. Introduction The United States is founded on the concept of Liberty. As expressed in the Constitution, all United States citizens are entitled to the rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. These values have been endlessly challenged throughout history in an attempt to determine where freedom should end and where government regulation might begin.
Chapter four of “Essentials of American Government Roots and Reform” describes civil liberties and their affect upon American government and society. Civil liberties, as defined in the book, are “the personal guarantees and freedoms that government cannot abridge, by law, constitution, or judicial interpretation.” Civil liberties that Americans enjoy include the freedom of religion, right to bear arms, freedom of speech, and freedom of privacy. Citizens are ensured freedom of speech, press, assembly, religion, and petition. In one case Gregory Johnson burned an American flag, and while many people found it offensive he was protected under the Constitution and was not convicted (oyez.org). The Judicial branch also checks laws to make sure they are constitutional. However there are still a significant amount of cases where citizens are denied one of their rights or one of their rights are infringed. There have been times in the past that rights have been denied and there continues to be instances when rights are denied or violated.

Donald John Trump officially became the 45th President of the United States of America when he took the oath of office on the 20th of January 2017, ushering in a new administration that vowed to stop what he termed as the ‘American Carnage’ from the previous administration including that of his immediate predecessor, President Obama. In a ceremony that was held in the US Capitol Building in Washington, D.C, President Trump gave out a speech that was generally focused on restoring lost greatness as he claimed that the previous administrations had not conducted the US as a superpower. In his speech, Trump claimed that the US deserved to be respected, and this is what he vowed to restore. He outlined his vision of restoring the country that he claimed was afflicted by ‘damages’ such as foreign exploitation, insecurity, unemployment and economic dislocation and referred himself as the best president to help out the country out of this.
