In the epic, The Odyssey, the epic hero in the story exhibits heroic traits, the most important I think is loyalty. In the first episode, it shows loyalty when they are at the land of the Lotus Eaters. The three men that Odysseus brings along, want to stay with the Lotus Eaters because they are so addicted to the drug. Odysseus must literally drag the men to the ship and tie them up for them to be able to not stay on the island of the Lotus Eaters.
Leadership is not about titles, positions or flowcharts. It is about one life influencing another. In the Odyssey, Odysseus needed to make a lot of decisions that are right for himself and his crew. He needed to get out of hard situations without loosing crew member or loosing his own life. Odysseus was a strong leader and did everything he could to help his crew because he needed to find a way out Cyclops' cave and he needed to choose whether or not he wanted to lose 6 crew members or lose everything.
Webster Dictionary defines leadership as simply, “providing direction or guidance,” but to be a successful leader one must focus on completing a goal in a way that is beneficial for the majority, not only the one in charge. This can be achieved by utilitarianism, which is doing of what is best for the most number of people, and carrying out actions that lead to positive effects, instead of merely being done with good intentions. In The Odyssey, Odysseus is not an exemplary leader because he went against utilitarianism by not being honest with his men, letting his arrogance control his behavior, and by killing many people in his house without a fair trial. Firstly, a leader must be truthful with those he works with in order for no errors or confusion to occur as a result of information being hidden. In The Odyssey, not being truthful lead to negative consequences for everyone on Odysseus’ ship, and thus contradicted the principle of utilitarianism stating that actions must lead to positive effects.
loy·al·ty ˈloiəltē/ noun the quality of being loyal to someone or something. a strong feeling of support or allegiance. Loyalty is very strong and very meaningful, like true love or brotherhood. Loyalty has to be earned, not just given away. In The Odyssey, the epic poem by Homer, Odysseus’ crew is steadfastly loyal to him and follow nearly his every direction, even though they are given many reasons not to be.
Can dishonesty be valuable if it was used to achieve desirable outcomes? Is lying considered justified if it was involved in a dangerous situation? It is not always bad to lie. As children, we were continuously taught to be honest. We have grown to be implanted with the fact that lying is unacceptable but admissible.
Watching the movie of Odyssey makes me realize of what great love is. Odyssey makes me realize that love is not much an inevitable ending as it is the beginning that will happen. It is what you do with what you begin that helps to determine your future. So we must design and pursue our destiny. We prove that promises is not made to be broken.
In The Homer the Odyssey there are a number of instances that reveal hospitality and temptation. In Ancient Greece hospitality was very important to their culture. This is shown throughout the epic where different ones open their homes to guests whom they didn’t even know. Temptation also plays an important part several times causing Odysseus and his men great harm. They were tempted over and over and couldn’t seem to resist the over whelming desire to give into temptation.
On their way home, Odysseus and his crew faced many obstacles. The way they handle these obstacles highlights their greediness. In The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus’s crew is portrayed as greedy which delays their journey home. First, the crew’s greediness delayed their journey home when traveling to Aiolos’ Kingdom by setting themselves back.
No matter the situation, honesty is always the best option. In book seven of “The Odyssey”, Odysseus does a very good job of being honest with everyone he meets along his journey. He’s doing this because he knows that if he tells the truth, it could get him a step closer to being home with his family. This shows that honesty goes a long way. “As much as it pains me to recall it, all I have told you is true.”
This might have seemed to be a selfish choice that Odysseus made, but Odysseus knew that if he told his crew more, that the boat would fall into chaos, and everyone would have died. Within the epic adventure of Scylla and Charybdis, the style of passages is pretty evident when it came to Odysseus selecting the safest route for him and his crew. Scylla and Charybdis are both derived from Greek mythology idiom of “caught between a rock and a hard place.” With the set goal of wanting to get home alive, he has to face the obstacle of wanting to sacrifice two men or risking his entire ship sinking to the ocean floor.
“[...]the gods brought me to the island Ogygia, where Kalypso lives, with ordered hair, a dread goddess, and she received me and loved me excessively and cared for me, and she promised to make me an immortal and all my days to be ageless, but never so could she win over the heart within me.” (p. 117-118). The theme in The Odyssey by Homer is the idea that loyalty is a good trait to have and it can benefit those involved. Loyalty is shown throughout The Odyssey towards multiple characters. Homer provides us with examples of loyalty to prove being loyal can aid most of the people involved.

Greed can be a good thing if it is used for the right reasons. For example, greed can be the key that leads to success. If a person wants to achieve recognition, they’ll go extreme measures to make it happen such as inventing something, excelling in their studies, or even being the best. However, in most cases, greed can lead to disaster. Having the desire to obtain something a person already possesses is selfish.
Imagine being apart from your family for over ten years, fighting for your life in a war, and in the many battles and problems you will face on your way home from war. Would you be able to fight a cyclops, pass a dangerous whirlpool and have to face the fact that your crew betrayed you? In the novel The Odyssey written by Homer, Odysseus must do all of these things and more. He has been away from his wife, son and many other family members for over ten years now, fighting for his life on his journey home after fighting in the Trojan war.
For centuries people have been trying to figure out one main question. Is there more in reality than can be perceived by the senses? Prime Reality is asking if it is an open or closed system? Is matter eternal? Are there gods, one God, or nothing.
