Courage is a force that can make us do incredible things and can help us bring out our true selves. In the film Finding Forrester, Jamal is a young black student who lives in a slum of New York City, he is an incredible student that loves to write and has great basketball skills. Also the mysterious William Forrester, a writer whom has been living in hiding for over 30 years. This powerful story tells how Jamal gaines the courage with William to complete their goals. One of the first points of conflict in the film is Jamal being smart. Jamal is a extremely smart kid, but he hides this fact out of fear of being ostracized by his friends. To keep his friends he needed to stay stupid for them. Not like how he actually is, and CC needs courage to show his true intellect. To complete his goal of going to a better school, he needed William Forester to push him to being uncomfortable and strive to do the best that he could at his writing and his intelligence. Not only did William help him see the self that he hid away from others, but also CR the self that he hid from himself. Another conflict that appears in the film is William not going outside his apartment. At a point in time William became to famous for his own comfort, and people started talking to him about his book when he deemed it an inappropriate time to. One instance happened while his brother was in the hospital which scared him because,IP when his brother died he lost a family to rely on. In this apartment, Jamal gained the courage to go to the new school with the help of William. “Forrester’s apartment, full of dusty stacks of classic tomes and the furious sound of a clicking typewriter, quickly becomes the place where the two writers meet.” (Berardinelli, 2000,p2) Jamal and William found a strong friendship in this apartment and became family.
