Imagine being completely alone after your family is murdered by what is believed to be your brother. I am reading Dark Places by Gillian Flynn, and I am on page 180. This book is about a woman named Libby Day who lives alone with no job after her family is murdered. Her brother is in jail responsible her family dying. After 24 years of living off inherited money, a group called the “Kill Club” asks her to be interviewed about the night of the crime and all the details. In return, she asks for money. While reading, I found three conflicts in the story. When reading Flynn’s Dark Places, a conflict is Libby’s financial state. Libby’s family was murdered at age seven, and she inherited $321,374 once she was 18. About 24 years of doing nothing later, there is a dearth of money. “There is now 982 dollars and 12 cents left in the fund…” (Flynn 6). She has no degree in anything and no idea what she wants to do with her life to earn money. The Cates family accused Ben Day of molesting Krissi the day of the Day family massacre. Although Krissi didn’t testify against Ben, and the murder case wasn’t legally linked to the accused molesting, the rumors were virulent to Ben. This is because all the jury for Ben’s murder case had heard about Ben possibly doing that as well as the massacre. “My dad was so protective of me, he freaked, went totally ballistic. He drove into town that day, the day of the murders, looking for Ben. I always think if he’d only found Ben, he’d have killed him…” (Flynn 143). This suggests that Krissi’s dad could have killed the Day family after all, with Ben taking the blame.
