Claudia Kennedy English 8 Mrs. Downs April 6, 2023 Conflicts on the Top of the World Jon Krakauer, suvivor of the tragic disaster on Mt. Everest in the year 1996, upon surviving this life threatening disaster he was inspired to write a novel. The idea of the novel was for people to gain a better understanding of the conflicts that took place up there. The novel was named Into Thin Air. Into Thin Air showed readers the true challenges of mountain climbing. Along with the idea of how much people are willing to give to reach their goals. The readers of Into Thin Air will be aware through conflicts such as Man vs. Nature, Man vs. Man, and Man vs. himself as the climbers who faced treacherous conditions. Himself is something shown through the determination of the climbers how they aren’t willing to give up on completing this dream. Scott Fischer, for example, had this sense of determination by never vocalizing his health issues. Jon Krakauer best describes this trait of Scott by saying “‘His will was astonishing. It didn’t matter how much pain he was in-he would ignore it and keep going.” (Krakauer 67) This characteristic of Scott would eventually lead to his death that fateful night. Doug Hansen was a mailman who had the dedication of seeing his dream fulfilled. Doug decided to try conquering Everest a second time, determined to reach the apex of the summit. Doug said to everyone including Jon Krakauer, “‘I’ve put too much of myself into this mountain to quit now, without giving it everything I’ve got.’” (Krakauer 73) Doug Hansen never stopped believing in his wildest dreams and kept going to reach the top of the summit by unfortunately dying up there due to the extreme storm. Jon Krakauer had this same will power of seeing this dream through and once at the top of the summit he says, “I had attained a goal I’d coveted since childhood.” (Krakauer 189) Jon is one of the lucky ones who actually made it to the top and back down to base camp. This determination helped get these brave climbers to the top of the summit to get a true sense of how powerful it’s to see a goal completed.
