Lois Lowry’s book, The Giver, is about a futuristic society that has no color, weather, or emotion. Jonas, a twelve year old kid, wants to help his community. In his society, the Elders control everything and there is no diversity. Jonas realizes through his new job that there is so much more to life than everyone being the same. Lowry warns the reader that conformity is not always a good thing and can lead to a society with no freedom of choice or diversity where people are feeling frustrated or powerless, and society does not improve. Individuality and uniqueness is what people should value. An example of conformity in The Giver is that Elders assigned people into families. Also, a family can have at most one girl and one boy. Although people didn’t have to worry about finding a family, this rule might frustrate because they can not have a choice of how many children they want, or who they want to marry. Also, the Elders think the same way since everyone is the same, so they would not be able to try new types of marriages for better results. Even though people would not have to go through depression, loss, or any other negative emotions, the good emotions outweigh the bad ones by a lot. People also use emotion as motivation to do something great and improve the society. Also, emotions can help people understand each other. It allows people to make deeper relationships and communicate better with each other.
