Conformity can change society drastically both negatively and positively. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird conformity changing society is shown many times. In this book a mockingbird represents innocence. Atticus even describes a mockingbird as something that does nothing but sing for people and that people shoot them for no reason. In To Kill a Mockingbird, conformity in society has turned Tom Robinson and Mr. Dolphus into “mockingbirds” due to the fact that they’re judged and hated because of them doing things that Maycomb doesn’t like. Dolphus is a mockingbird as well. He didn’t do anything but have kids with a black woman but Maycomb didn’t like that so they made him out to be a bad person. In To Kill a Mockingbird Mr. Dolphus says “you mean why do I pretend? Well it’s very simple, he said. Some folks don’t like the way I live.” (Lee 228). He only acted like he was drunk and an alcoholic. He never did anything except go against Maycomb’s morals. He just lived the life he wanted. Scout also thinks in To Kill a Mockingbird “I had a feeling that I shouldn’t be here listening to this sinful man who had mixed children and didn’t care who knew it.” (Lee 228). Scout and everyone else thinks and talks badly about him because he has mixed children. Mr. Dolphus is just living the best life he can and is hated for it. In To Kill a Mockingbird Tom says “Yes, suh. I felt right sorry for her, she seemed to try more’n the rest of ‘em.” (Lee 224). Tom didn’t;t do anything wrong, he just wanted to help her because he felt sorry for her. He never bothered anyone, he just helped when he was asked for it. In To Kill a Mockingbird it says “Judge Taylor was polling the jury: Guilty… guilty … guilty … guilty …” (Lee 240). Even though there was only circumstantial evidence the jury still found him guilty. The real reason they did that was because he was black. From the way the trial went it’s pretty clear that Tom was innocent and kind. Most people knew that but didn’t care because of his skin
