Even when individuals try their hardest, the unexpected obstacles of life may get in the way of the desired outcome. Using language throughout a story can help to reveal the tone, as it is in “Araby” by James Joyce. The tone of gloom is reflected through use of language: specifically, connotation and symbolism. There are multiple examples of connotation throughout the story which helps to reveal the tone of the story, the word choices used by the author which mean something else within the story helps to display the gloomy tone. ”Summons” (111) which literally means to order an appearance before a judge but in the narrator's use of the word to express the effect the girl had on him, suggesting he could not help but desire her. Another example is the word “litanies” (111) which literally means a series of petitions for use in church services or processions but is used to express the service of the boys to the pig market, not actually to the church.
