“Pleasantville” Life is filled with ups and downs and often times it can be very unpredictable. We are constantly being overruled by a system of sovereign authority. Nonetheless, it is important to acknowledge that everything is changing, and sometimes, there are point of fluctuation and moments that could transform our lives and who we are, but only if we embrace them. Recently, I watched a movie called “Pleasantville”. This film had me questioning about many moral concepts, but I was more interested about its emphasis on conservatism an acceptance. Is it alright for a healthy society to believe in forms of risk taking behaviors in order to achieve greater happiness? More importantly, are people who are governed by conservatism truly satisfied with their lives? In the following paragraphs, I will summarize the story of the film, illustrate what we can learn from it, and point out the important use of the symbolic images it contains, in order to demonstrate why I think that accepting unusual changes moves you from just feeling happy to actually being happy and living a good life. Conservatism is depriving because it leaves less place for society to advance. It teaches us to suppress our ideas and emotions and to do things as they always have been done. If conservatism would still be fully present in our era, like it was in the past, things would be very different. Racist would still be widely spread, people would have a sexist mentality and homophobia would be the norm of society. Ignorance would mean complete happiness. We think that all of the above are horrible, but we should not forget that it was all a reality less than century
