Could you imagine being taken away from your home and seeing everyone around you die! Courage is hard to be shown when people are being taken away and thrown into many concentration camps. Well that is what happened during the Holocaust. The Holocaust lasted from January 30, 1933, through May 8, 1945. That's over a decade of horror for most Jews. As a result of social injustice, the character that displays the most courage is Daniel from the book Daniels’s Story. Daniel is courageous due to the fact that he is perseverant, selfless, and a risk taker. One reason Daniel is courageous is that he is persistent. Meaning that he starts to become aware of difficulties. In the text, it says, “I know we are in serious trouble…” (Matas 122). On page 62, “Still, if we were caught we’d be jailed possibly even hanged.”(Matas 62). In this part of the book, Daniel has been scavenging for anything that would burn so his family wouldn't die, even though he knows he might get caught. Daniel also allows Peter to take half of what they find. Some may say that Mr. Frank from the book The Diary of Anne Frank is more courageous than Daniel. The text on page 99 shows, ” For the past two years we have lived in fear. Now we can live in hope.” (Matas 99). Mr. Frank is calm and is ready for whatever else is about to happen. He never loses his temper even when the worst of things happen. On the other hand, Daniel is a risk taker, meaning that he involves himself in danger to achieve a goal. For example, on page 95, “I managed to take three more pictures; any more would have been too dangerous” (Matas 95). Daniel is risking his life for all the people who are in concentration camps to get a chance to survive. This will happen if the photos get out to the army but it will be
