In Arthur Miller’s historical fiction play The Crucible, based on the tragic Salem witch trials, there are numerous displays of courage, weakness, and truth. Essentially, this is what the play is about.
Word is spreading throughout the town of Salem, Massachusetts. The smell of witchcraft is filling the air. There are fingers pointing at neighbors. There are accusations being made. Uneasiness overwhelms the souls of the townsfolk. Anger boils over in the families of the ones accused. People are lying just to stay alive. These people would rather live as a sinner, a true act of weakness. If a person does not confess, they will surely be hung. Others will not confess to witchcraft for they know what is right in God’s eyes. Some people stick up for what is right, and they are courageous in the hearts of the accused. She claims to see a “yellow bird” that is supposedly Mary’s spirit. The rest of girls with Abigail follow suit. Mary Warren lets her fear get the best of her and says that John has been influencing her. She claims that John Proctor is the “devil’s man” who came to her and forced her to sign his “black book.” Abigail then stops her act and Mary gets back into her good favors. This confirms that Mary Warren is an especially weak person. After John Proctor is accused, he begins to run out of options. He realizes that he must confess to his adultery. John confesses that he had an affair with Abigail Williams. Abigail objects to this. This is a huge display of truthfulness. John Proctor has wanted this sin of his to be kept a secret. He did not even enjoy speaking about it with his wife. Out of desperation, however, John decided to come clean. In the end, coming clean did not help him and his accusation of being the “devil’s man” remained. However, John refused to confess to witchcraft for he knew what was
