In Harper Lee’s book To Kill a Mockingbird, there are many times when the characters are faced with challenges and they show courage as they overcome them. Some of those times when courage is expressed are when Atticus defends Tom, when Scout gets the lynch party to back off, and when Boo saves the kids from Bob Ewell. These are examples of courage in the face of adversity because these characters risked their own lives to help out another character. The first example of courage in the face of adversity is when Atticus defends Tom Robinson. Atticus shows courage by doing this because of how everyone says that he is defending negroes and that is wrong. Everyone in town also talks about him defending Tom and how that affects his kids. In chapter 9 of To KIll a Mockingbird Scout says “I was ready to punch Cecil Jacobs in the face. He had announced in the schoolyard the day before the Scout Finch’s daddy defended niggers, Atticus?” (Lee 87). When one of the men grabs Jem she kicks him right where it counts and then as she is looking around she recognizes Mr. Cunningham and starts talking to him about Walter and she tells him to tell Walter hi, and this then causes the lynch party to realize they have a family of their own and they decide to back off and leave. In chapter 15 of To Kill a Mockingbird Scout says “Don’t you touch him!” “I kicked the man swiftly. I was surprised to see him fall back in real pain. I intended to kick his shin, but aimed too high.” (Lee 175). This shows how Scout showed courage because even though the man could have grabbed her to she kicked him so he would let go of
