Atticus is the main character who represents courage throughout the book. Jem as a little boy has learned about courage from his father, what shows that he is also courages. Boo Radley who we never heard from much represents courage in a different way than Atticus and Jem. From these 3 characters we will find out what real courage is. A way that Atticus showed
The central idea of To Kill A Mockingbird is Bravery. A quote used in the story that Harper Lee uses to show this central idea is “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view” (30/34). This quote shows how some people can be brave. Many of the characters in the story were brave but the three i'm going to focus on are Atticus, Jem, and Arthur also known as “Boo”. Atticus, the father of Jem and Scout was very brave throughout the story.
To Kill a Mockingbird Essay In the movie “Finding Nemo”, Dory and Nemo find themselves in trouble. In the middle of the ocean, Dory and Nemo see a massive net capturing fish, and Dory, being curious, swims right into it and becomes trapped. Without hesitation, Nemo swims into the dangerous situation to save Dory, despite the risk. Nemo in that moment realized that his bravery isn't just about facing danger, but standing with others he cared about, no matter the risk. Similarly, just as bravery has an impact in finding Nemo, the characters in To Kill a Mockingbird have an impact too.
One lesson in the book that I feel Jem learns as a part of growing up is moral courage. Atticus once told Jem that “courage is [not] a man with a gun in his hand. It 's when you know you 're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what.” Jem had always seen bravery as important and often tried to show the courage in him but only learnt about what moral courage really was through a series events that took place in the book.
There was a part in the book when Atticus stood outside Tom Robinson’s jail cell knowing people were going to come to try and kill him. When they did come Dill, Jem and Scout stepped in trying to protect Atticus. That action alone showed courage also on page 205 when Scout recognized one of them as one of the Cunningham’s and started talking to him. “Do you remember me, Mr.Cunningham? I’m Jean Louise Finch.
To children like Jem and Scout Finch, being courageous is completing a daredevil like task to impress others; however, as they grow up they learn what true courage is as they face situations where their courage is tested. They also witness an obstacle Atticus Finch overcomes that enhances their definition of courage. In the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee distinguishes foolishness from real acts of courage through the experiences of Jem, Scout, and Atticus Finch. At the beginning of the novel, Jem and Scout believe courage is getting close to Boo Radley, a character whom has a reputation of stabbing his father in the leg with a pair of scissors and committing all of the small crimes in Maycomb. While Jem and Scout’s friend Dill
Jem knows that this action is putting his life in danger, but he chooses to defend his father in this huge courageous act. Through Jems actions, and an enormous amount of courage is
Courage “Courage is simply the willingness to be afraid and act anyways” - Dr. Robert Anthony. In courage is one of the main themes. There are many examples of courage in the book. Atticus shows courage in many ways and parts of the book and so do many other characters. In To Kill A Mockingbird Atticus shows courage towards Tom in a couple ways and Boo Radley shows courage.
Harper Lee wants to tell us that it takes courage NOT to kill a mockingbird Courage and the symbol of the mockingbird are two of the most important, or in fact in my opinion the most important themes, which are addressed and displayed in the highly praised, but also controversial novel “To Kill A Mockingbird” written by Harper Lee. I will try to interpret these two motives and show how they are strongly connected to each other. There are many different types of courage and many people who all show it in their own personal way. If people talk about bravery and courage, they mostly think of the physical kind of courage. But there are also other kinds, which are often forgotten or cast aside by their big brother: moral and emotional courage.
The theme of the story, To Kill a Mockingbird, is to always be courageous, no matter what. Examples of courage show up all throughout the novel. From Atticus, to Jem, to Dill, and to Mrs. Dubose they all show courage. Whether they are reading to Mrs. Dubose or running up and touching the Radley house they are all courageous characters. One example of Atticus showing courage is when he takes Tom Robinson's court case against the Ewells (Lee 89).
Thesis: The well known and award winning novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee should continue to stay on the freshman reading list for years to come because of Atticus Finch’s wise lessons about courage, empathy, and equality do not only impact his kids, but many readers can learn and apply them everyday life as well. One of the most memorable lessons taught by Atticus is about courage, where he explains that courage is presented through thoughtful actions and perseverance, not with objects, such as weapons. One example of this is when Atticus’ had shot the rabid hound in chapter ten. When an ill and dangerous dog was found wandering the streets of Maycomb, someone had to shoot it.
Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird examines the idea of courage, both physical and the courage of your convictions. Physical being the usual perceived form of bravery, while courage of your convictions Atticus calls the second type of courage real courage, and tries to teach his young children the meaning of courage. Atticus believes that real courage is standing up for what you believe in, and following through with your goals even when there is no hope, because “you rarely win”. Jem and Scout learn about courage from Mrs. Dubose, Atticus Finch and Arthur “Boo” Radley.
“If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.” Although sometimes acceptable, this saying is often a very bad idea. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, some circumstances arise in which this saying would definitely not work. Even so, it can prove difficult not “joining ‘em,” and it can take a lot of bravery. There are numerous examples in this book, but three people are especially courageous.
Most of them, if not all, showed true courage by standing up for what they believe in and keeping their heads up high. Harper Lee uses many scenes and key characters to develop the theme of real courage for instance, Jem, Atticus, and Miss Maudie go through a journey to discover, understand and to show that real courage is mental courage in the face of physical and emotional torment. Particularly, Harper Lee uses Jem Atticus Finch to show that courage means pushing through even though you know have already lost. In Chapter 11, Jem and Scout had many encounters with Mrs. Dubose.
Cecile Gilmer, author of “The People Who love You When No One Else Will”, experienced difficulties living with her blood family. Nevertheless, she lived with her best friend’s kin, the Beaches, to thrive. After living with her caring family for years, Gilmer realized that families can be any people who shows up and loves her. Notably, the Beaches did all three kinds of Dana – meaning giving based on the terminology of Buddhism ideology – to Gilmer: alms Dana, fishery Dana, and courage Dana. By giving her lunch money, an insurance policy, and diverse clothing, the Beaches did alms Dana; by helping Gilmer with her homework, the Beaches did fishery Dana; and by visiting her at football games and drama performances, the Beaches did courage Dana.
