Courage, loyalty, courtesy are all standards that although were once vibrant, have now slipped away from society to become unpredicted. These two romances discuss the values in various ways, addressing the way of life when these stories took place. Chivalry still exists, but nowhere near on the same level as it once did, while loyalty, courage, and courtesy are traits and characteristics of the mature. In Le Morte D'Arthur, King Arthur shows courage in the way he goes into battle to protect his men and to fight for what he believes. He is loyal to his knights and does not hesitate to lead his army into battle and mourns the heavy losses that follow. . After King Arthur and Sir Modred’s armies fight, Arthur says he would have rather died than see his knights killed. This shows how the knights are valued by their king. They are very loyal, especially Sir Lucas and Sir Bedivere. Sir Lucas shows knightly values, though he is badly wounded, by reporting things to King Arthur. Sir Bedivere returned to King Arthur two times before throwing the sword into the lake as Arthur wished. He could have left but he remained with his king and did his bidding. The Green Knight had the courtesy of saving Sir Gawain, although he may have not deserved it and doing only what made him and Sir Gawain even, and not taking more. Sir Gawain also had courtesy in the way he remembered the contract and promise and the way he knew what his responsibility was, while loyalty was had by both Sir Gawain and the Green Knight in the way they were loyal to the contract made by them both. The Green Knight turns out to be courteous by giving the sash back in the end. In this way the story addresses knightly values through both actions of the characters and the dialogue between
