Courtroom Observation After much trying, I finally managed to find a court room with a trial and I must say it was a pretty fun experience. I found my trial at Oakland County Circuit Court on November 15th at 1 o’clock. The judge was Nanci Grant. Apparently I was supposed to call beforehand but she kindly allowed me to sit in and watch the trial which I was very appreciative of. It was a very interesting process, one that I really enjoyed. Prior to this assignment I had never even stepped foot into a court house, so I really enjoyed seeing how things were done. I managed to get a pretty intriguing case which really helped keep my interest and made the process much easier. I had nothing but good impressions from my observation. Judge Grant was very firm and professional; it was interesting to see a judge in person. The attorneys were both sharp and determined. They both new their stuff and refused to let their client lose. Seems obvious because we know they have a personal stake in their trials, their pay. Regardless, it was still refreshing to see them fight as if they had an emotional tie to their respective clients. It was also nice to see the opposing attorneys shake hands and exchange a few words once the trial was over. It reminds you that there really is nothing personal and that both people are just doing their job. The whole process was so enjoyable thanks to the fact that it was so directly tied to what I’m learning. It represents such a large portion of what our class is about. I’m a finance major and I was still thoroughly intrigued with the entire process. Even though I don’t plan on being a lawyer, the process still resonated with me because it’s still very relevant to me. There is a huge legal aspect to business and this class and this assignment in particular really have helped me grasp that aspect a lot more. The only thing that would have made it better would have been to have had a trial related to big businesses, corporations. Things like tax evasion, fraud, or anything that goes against the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, simply because that’s more related to my major. Regardless it was still a great assignment that I really enjoyed. It taught me a lot and its always refreshing to have assignments that correlate to real world
