To Kill a Mockingbird There is much cruelty in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird. The meaning behind the title to destroy the innocent. Destroying the ones who don’t know any better because they haven’t learned. The innocence was taken away from Jem, Scout, and Dill once they found out what was really going on in the real world around them. The cruelty in this novel is caused by killing the mockingbird victims. There are 2 main victims to cruelty in this book. Tom Robinson, who is a harmless victim of racism, accused of a crime he did not do. Boo Radley, who was poor, lonely, and uneducated on the outside. In the inside all he wanted were to have friends, he was just never taught how. Both men are judged for their outside appearance, and are given cruel punishment for no reason. Tom Robinson, was a middle aged disabled African American. He had a family of his own and was well known for generosity and kind works. He was victim of cruelty automatically because of the color of his skin. He was accused of rape to a white young woman, which was not true. Boo Radley wanted friends, and he attempted to befriend Jem and Scout, by leaving them gifts. Jem and Scout were his only contact with the outside world, which was quickly stopped by his older brother Nathan Radley. Eventually another opportunity presented itself for Boo Radley to show his true identity. Jem and Scout were attacked by the evil Bob Ewells. Boo saw they were in danger and attacked Bob, which saved both Jem and Scout. After that he was able to be understood and prove he isn’t a
