People who read the book The Great Gatsby by F.Scott Fitzgerald, mostly admire the character of Gatsby for his persistent affection to Daisy. He is admired for changing his life to win back the heart of Daisy. He spent large amounts of money to hold parties every week in order to attract Daisy back to his life; he bought a magnificent house in the West Egg to be close to the house of Daisy and Tom which is just across the river, the East Egg; he loved Daisy so much that he is willing to cover for Daisy.People also appreciate Gatsby for not being pretentious when he became rich. This beautiful description of Daisy's voice epitomizes the depth and passion of Jay Gatsby's dream. Everything that makes Gatsby's dream a reality reflects on Daisy's voice. The “voice” uses lit devices of metaphor as the surface of Daisy shows to Gatsby. The fact that he can actually hear her breathe and speak makes Gatsby believe that he can reach his dream more easily- that he can be with Daisy once more for she is there with him, living, breathing, speaking. It is terribly sad and ironic that Jay Gatsby is so overwhelmed by this ideal. He had fashioned his entire existence around this dream, but the dream remains just a dream which is impossible to realize. Gatsby does’t want to believe his dream girl is a materialist who is just play with him. In the argument of Tom and Gatsby, Daisy said “[Gatsby wanted] too much” (127). Indeed, Daisy clearly shows her heart belongs to Tom and she will never leave him for Gatsby. So, just as Daisy's voice is fluctuating, feverish warmth, it is only a voice. I consider he should admit his family and use the legal way to be a successful man. In that way, I think the public will also admire him and the friend and people who work with him will also be different. The truth of Gatsby is nasty. Besides his appearance broke the family of Daisy and Tom, his cold-plodded response to Ms. Wilson’s dead is also one of his flaws. At the last night that Gatsby talking to Nick, while Nick tells him Ms. Wilson is killed, he does not feel any apologetic to her “ I thought so; I told Daisy I thought so. It’s better that the shock should all come at once. She stood it pretty well” (138). As Nick said, in his eyes he doesn’t care anyone except Daisy, her reaction was the only thing that mattered. Gatsby said these words shows that he actually even doesn’t realize his fault which surprises me. Gatsby lost his humanity while he is chasing his dream, he thinks a normal people’s life is useless.
