As a reaction to the Transcendental movement of the nineteenth century, where the perspective switched from rationalism to dark, imaginative, and intuitive, Dark Romanticism emerged. The authors Emily Dickinson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Edgar Allan Poe are just a few who have eloquently illustrated how Dark Romanticism concentrates on how dark humanity can be with its self-destructive, judgmental, vengeful, imaginative, and psychological effects of guilt and sin. Dark Romanticism mainly uses literary techniques such as imagery, symbolism, metaphor, allegory, and personification. However, the big one widely used as a significant part of the story would be symbolism because it often represents supernatural beings such as devils or spirits.
