Through the stages Dehumanization, the gruesome act of stripping one of their positive human qualities or traits. This process happens more than most people realize; it's especially common in any abusive atmosphere. However it is very common for many of the humans that have experienced the act of dehumanization to not even realize it has even happened to them. Alternatively those who do realize notice there are usually stages that one goes through during this time being naivety, survival, and finally acceptance. Being naive is something that almost everyone experiences at least once in their life. However this usually happens during the early stages of life when they are still young and inexperienced. During the beginning of Wiesel's journey we see his naivety during childhood and the way he treats hope and trust towards others (Wiesel 4-6). When going through dehumanization it is often something that most are not used to; this can cause the thoughts and feelings of someone going through it to be naive or childishly hopeful. Every human in existence has felt the need to survive whether it be literally or figuratively. Almost the entirety of Wiesel's journey involved him surviving, we see this most commonly during the time he is in the concentration camps towards the beginning (Weisel 48-56). Surviving can come with many exhilarating feelings and often puts one's body into overdrive and makes strength out of what once was weak.
