In the memoir Night by Elie Wiesel, we are told about the awful things that happened to the Jews during the Holocaust. Fifteen year-old Elie is a Jew who is strong in his faith. He and his family are taken from his home in Sighet to go to concentration camps. At these camps, they are all treated like animals. Lots of people struggle to survive or even die at these camps. Jews are dehumanized throughout chapters 1-3 of Night. The first way that the Jews are dehumanized is by them being forced into cattle cars in chapter two. Though the cars were small, there were 80 people crammed into each one. The Jews have a very hard time in these cars. For example, they are given little to no food and water. They were in these cars for days, so some people died from dehydration and starvation. Another reason they struggled in these cars was because there was no place to go to the bathroom. Since there were no toilets, the Jews had to use the restroom in the corner. The feces and urine made the car stink. Sometimes while they were in the car, German soldiers stood at the top and shot guns down at the people in the cars. Many people died from this as well.
