In today’s society, to what extent does dehumanization occur? In the Michael Bay’s dystopian movie, The Island, Lincoln Six Echo and Jordan Two Delta are contained in an isolated environment, governed by stern rules. All the people living in the island believe that the outside world is contaminated and there is only one island left that is safe for them. Each week, the controllers hold a lottery and one of the occupants are allowed to live on the island. After speculation about the island from finding a live moth, Lincoln Six Echo discovers that the winners of the lottery are used to harvest their organs or become surrogates for mothers in the outside world. There are multiple different examples of this process occurring in Lincoln Six Echo and Jordan Two Delta’s lives. One of the main examples of dehumanization occuring throughout the Merrick Corporation is with what they wear. All of those occupying the isolated environment wear the same, white outfits. Their clothes are washed for them daily and placed in their drawers for them to wear. All of their outfits are identical. Also, their names are evidence that dehumanization has occurred. Their names are representative of the last name that they are the insurance policy of, along with the district and generation that they are from. Their names do not express any form of individuality. The food that they eat also shows signs of dehumanization. Since all of their health records are constantly being kept, the Merrick Corporation only lets them eat certain foods based off of what they are lacking or what is in excess in their systems. Because of this, they are not allowed any choice of diet. Since those living in the isolated environment do not know that the outside world is safe, they are not aware that they are being dehumanized and that what the corporation is doing to them is
