Have traveled around entire state, all by yourself, because of your determination? During the great depression, many children were homeless and very poor. They didn’t have anyone to care for them. They rarely had any food. They never had anything to look forward to. Bud, Not Buddy would've been a different book if Bud wasn't determined because he wouldn't have ended up figuring out that Herman was his grandpa, he wouldn't end up in a band, he would have stayed in the foster home at flint, and he never would have kissed Deza Malone.
To begin with, Bud would've never found out that Herman was his grandpa and not his dad if he wasn't determined to search for him. In chapter 9, Bud decided to travel

At the start of chapter 5, Bud was "on the lamb" from the Amoses' house, and he went to the library to see where he would go next. He could have just gone back to the mission to wait patiently for his next foster family, instead of looking for Herman. In chapter 8, Bud met with his friend Bugs, and they both decided to go west. If Bud had a fixed mindset, he would have backed out and stayed at Flint by himself. On the contrary, if Bud decided not to look for Herman, he would've stayed be himself at the foster home in Flint.
Finally, Bud would have never kissed Deza Malone if he wasn't so determined to look for Herman. Later in chapter 8, Bud ended up kissing a girl named Deza Malone in a place called "Hooverville." If he chose not to go west with Bugs, he wouldn't have ended up meeting Deza and kissing her. Also, in chapter 8 Bud wouldn't have ended up learning about the history of Hooverville if Deza didn't tell him. If Bud didn't kiss Deza, she never would've told him about their culture. As a result, if Bud never kissed Deza, he would've never gotten his first kiss, or learn about Hooverville's
