Throughout this movie, deviant behavior can be seen within all the characters. However, the best example of deviance is Bender. Deviance is explained as a violation of rules, or norms, and Bender is the definition of deviance. Good job defining then providing examples. Bender is an extremely deviant youth, and his attitude is the best example. He has no respect for authority, as seen by his interactions with Mr. Vernon. Often times, Bender calls him “Dick,” making fun of his name, Richard. This just shows how fearless Bender is of authority figures that supposedly have control. In addition, he pushes Mr. Vernon’s buttons by arguing with him and making him look foolish in front of the other kids in detention. Another example of his deviance is his actions. He smokes weed, and when the other characters find out, they’re appalled because they would never think to do that. Yet another example is his refusal to stay where he’s told. He doesn’t sit in the library as he’s told; he does what he wants and runs through the halls. This eventually leads to him being locked in a closet, but that doesn’t deter him from again, doing what he wishes. Yup. I think labeling might be the most serious damage we can do to another human being. It really affects behavior and what other people expect. He’s called various names by the other kids, his father, and Mr. Vernon. He’s called a criminal, a loser, a gutless turd, a no good son of a bitch, a moron, stupid, lazy, and various other degrading names. Eventually, he starts to believe them after repeatedly being brought down. This is a prime example of the labeling theory. As he is repeatedly being called these names, he begins to see himself as the names. As these
